Stainless steel panels and doors are chosen for hospital OT/ICU builds because they're non-porous, easy to disinfect and don't harbour bacteria the way painted surfaces can. But 'low maintenance' doesn't mean 'no maintenance' — a few habits go a long way toward keeping a system performing like new for years.
Daily and weekly care
- Wipe panel and door surfaces with a soft cloth and the disinfectant your ward already uses — avoid steel wool or abrasive pads, which can scratch the surface and create places for bacteria to hide.
- Check door gaskets periodically — a worn gasket is often the first thing to fail, and it compromises the room's pressure seal well before the panel itself shows wear.
- Log HVAC filter differential pressure regularly; a rising reading is usually the earliest sign a filter needs changing.
What to avoid
- Chloride-heavy cleaners on SS304 surfaces used constantly — if your ward relies on these daily, ask us about SS316 for the components that see the most exposure.
- Ignoring small panel joint gaps or damaged sealant — these are exactly the crevices a classified room's finish is designed to eliminate.
Hardware wears before the panel does
On doors and passboxes, hinges, interlocks and door closers typically need attention before the stainless steel body does. A quick periodic check of moving parts catches most issues before they become a validation failure.
